Drake Maye Admits Losing Patience Cost Patriots in Season-Opening Loss
SEATTLE — New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye described his three-interception performance as “unacceptable” after the Patriots suffered a 13-10 season-opening loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night.
Maye’s costly mistakes came at crucial moments, including a game-sealing interception in the end zone with New England in position to attempt a potential game-tying field goal.
“That wasn't how I play football and how I want to represent my game and playing quarterback for the Patriots,” Maye said after the game.
The Patriots appeared to be in control early, taking a 10-0 lead in the third quarter. Seattle, however, rallied after starting quarterback Sam Darnold was forced out of the game early in the first quarter with a hip injury.
Maye’s first two interceptions were turned into 10 fourth-quarter points by the Seahawks. His first pick came on a deep pass intended for heavily covered receiver Romeo Doubs, a throw Maye admitted he forced. His second interception came on a third-and-14 pass toward receiver Pop Douglas that appeared to be telegraphed.
Maye finished the night 23-of-33 passing for 178 yards and one touchdown, along with three interceptions.
“I thought we had the game under control,” Maye said. “I thought we had a good plan to try to start chipping away and be patient. Lost patience and it cost us — decisions that cost us the game on my part, on my end.”
The performance marked a rare setback for Maye, who had thrown multiple interceptions in only one game last season, including the playoffs — Super Bowl LX.
The Patriots still had a chance to force overtime late in the fourth quarter. Trailing 13-10, New England drove deep into Seattle territory and reached the Seahawks’ 16-yard line with 26 seconds remaining, putting the team within range for kicker Andy Borregales to attempt a potential game-tying field goal.
Instead, Maye’s third interception ended the comeback attempt.
On third-and-5, Maye faded backward while attempting to find receiver Mack Hollins near the right side of the end zone. Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe intercepted the pass, effectively sealing Seattle’s victory.
Maye acknowledged that he should have thrown the ball away rather than risk another turnover.
“I was trying to get rid of it,” Maye said. “I realized Mack was there in the back and didn't put enough on it to get it out [of bounds]. It was just unacceptable.”
He added: “With a chance to send it to overtime at the worst, and the only thing you can do is turn the ball [for that not to happen] — that's what I did.”
Despite the late-game mistakes, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said the team continues to have confidence in its young quarterback. Vrabel emphasized that New England wants Maye to remain aggressive while avoiding unnecessary risks in critical situations.
“We want to be aggressive, not reckless,” Vrabel said.
After the game, Vrabel shared a moment with Maye and his family outside the locker room, reinforcing the coach’s support for his quarterback.
“It’s a long season; we're going to hold our head up high. We have nothing but the utmost confidence in him,” Vrabel said. “He's going to make a lot of plays for us.”
