Texas Stuns No. 1 Ohio State with Stunning Fourth-Quarter Comeback

 

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns produced one of the biggest comebacks in recent college football history Saturday night, rallying from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat No. 1 Ohio State 24-23.

Ohio State appeared to be in complete control for more than three quarters, leading 23-3 and seemingly on course for another victory over Texas. However, the Longhorns dramatically turned the game around with three consecutive touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.

Texas capped its remarkable comeback with a touchdown on third-and-goal with just 25 seconds remaining, taking the lead for the first time in the game.

According to ESPN Research, Ohio State became the first AP No. 1 team since 2004 to lose after holding a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes had also won 115 consecutive games when leading by at least 20 points.

Ohio State struggled offensively in the final quarter, managing just 49 total yards. A missed 45-yard field goal with just over four minutes remaining also proved costly.

Jeremiah Smith was outstanding for Ohio State, finishing with 164 receiving yards, but he did not record a catch in the fourth quarter.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day admitted his team failed to finish the game.

“We had them on the ropes and didn't finish,” Day said.

Despite the painful defeat, Ohio State center Carson Hinzman remained confident about the remainder of the season, saying the team still has plenty of football ahead and can accomplish its goals.
