49ers Dominate Rams 27-7 in Historic NFL Opener in Australia

MELBOURNE —The San Francisco 49ers made a statement in historic fashion Friday, overpowering the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Australia.

In front of 100,021 fans, the 49ers stunned a Rams team widely regarded as one of the league’s top Super Bowl contenders entering the season. Brock Purdy, San Francisco’s returning stars and several key newcomers combined for a dominant Week 1 performance that immediately put the NFC on notice.

## Purdy Leads 49ers' Offensive Surge

Brock Purdy was at the center of San Francisco’s impressive offensive display, throwing for 205 yards and three touchdowns.

The 49ers established their rhythm from the opening possession, marching 65 yards on 15 plays. Purdy completed 9 of 12 passes on the drive, connecting with Christian McCaffrey, rookie Kaelon Black, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and newly acquired receiver Mike Evans.

San Francisco eventually took a 10-7 lead into halftime after Purdy delivered a spectacular 39-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson, a former Rams receiver.

The 49ers then pulled away after halftime. Their most impressive scoring drive came early in the fourth quarter, when Purdy capped an 11-play, 99-yard possession with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel.

It was the kind of performance that made it clear San Francisco should not be overlooked in the NFC.

## Rams' Star-Studded Lineup Struggles

The Rams entered the game with enormous expectations, boasting both the reigning AP NFL MVP, Matthew Stafford, and reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett.

Neither star was able to make the expected impact.

Stafford struggled throughout the afternoon, finishing with just 155 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception, along with a 61.2 passer rating.

The seven points scored by Los Angeles marked only the second time Stafford has started a game for the Rams in which the team scored 10 points or fewer. The other came against San Francisco in Week 4 of the 2022 season.

Garrett was similarly quiet. The longtime defensive standout finished without a tackle, only the fourth time in his 135-game career that he has failed to record one.

San Francisco offensive tackle Trent Williams also won his highly anticipated battle with Garrett. According to Next Gen Stats, Garrett recorded five quarterback pressures, but only one came in 11 matchups against Williams.

The Rams' offense, which led the NFL in both scoring and total yards last season, managed only 290 yards and committed two turnovers. Los Angeles also failed on two of its three fourth-down attempts.

## Mike Evans Makes Immediate Impact

One of the biggest storylines entering the game was the debut of Mike Evans in a 49ers uniform.

The 33-year-old wide receiver looked every bit like the six-time Pro Bowler he had been during his long tenure with Tampa Bay.

Evans caught six passes for 49 yards, tying for the game-high in receptions. He also made a crucial impact on third downs during San Francisco's opening drive.

His biggest moment came in the third quarter when he hauled in a 2-yard touchdown reception from Purdy on a fade route.

The touchdown was Evans' 37th career touchdown reception from five yards or fewer, tying him for second all time in that category, according to NFL Research.

San Francisco also displayed a balanced rushing attack. McCaffrey carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards, while rookie Kaelon Black rushed 14 times for 65 yards.

The combination of new additions and returning stars appeared to click immediately.

## McVay's International Streak Comes to an End

Rams head coach Sean McVay had previously enjoyed considerable success in international games, but that streak ended in Melbourne.

Los Angeles left Southern California Tuesday night and arrived in Australia Thursday morning, roughly one day before Friday's kickoff. By comparison, the 49ers arrived earlier and had more time to adjust to the environment.

McVay had previously led the Rams to a 3-0 record in international games, including a 35-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London last season despite arriving only a day before the game.

This time, however, the quick turnaround appeared to work against Los Angeles.

The Rams looked sluggish early, punting on their first two possessions. Although Stafford's 41-yard completion to Puka Nacua late in the first quarter briefly sparked the offense, Kyren Williams scored two plays later, Los Angeles could not sustain its momentum.

Stafford was eventually pulled late in the fourth quarter after the Rams took possession, effectively conceding the game.

## Defensive Returns Spark San Francisco

The return of Nick Bosa and Fred Warner proved to be a major difference-maker for the 49ers.

On the very first play from scrimmage, Bosa pressured Stafford into a difficult throw that was nearly intercepted by Warner.

Both players missed significant portions of last season because of injuries—Bosa with a torn ACL and Warner with an ankle injury. Their presence immediately appeared to elevate San Francisco's defense.

Warner finished with a game-high 11 tackles, while Bosa recorded four tackles, including two for loss.

Although the 49ers occasionally allowed the Rams to make plays on the ground, the overall defensive performance was outstanding, particularly in the first game under defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

## A Statement Victory for the 49ers

Week 1 results rarely determine the fate of an entire season, and there are still 16 regular-season games remaining for both teams.

But San Francisco's performance in Melbourne was impossible to ignore.

The 49ers successfully blended experienced stars, returning players and major offseason additions into a cohesive unit. Purdy looked confident, Evans immediately became a factor, McCaffrey and Black provided balance on the ground, and the returning defensive stars helped shut down one of the NFL's most highly regarded offenses.

For the Rams, meanwhile, the loss raises plenty of questions. Stafford and Garrett were unable to provide the impact expected from two of the league's biggest stars, while the offense never found its rhythm.

The 27-7 defeat was also Los Angeles' first loss by more than seven points since Week 12 of the 2024 season.

For McVay, the defeat ended his perfect international record. He is now 3-1 in international games, with his three victories ranking second among NFL head coaches behind Doug Pederson's four.
